EnLighten Study 2.0.3

This version of EnLighten is part of a six-month study aimed at evaluating the safety, efficiency, and environmental impact of providing drivers with real-time traffic light information. Currently, the service is available only in four cities:

• Phoenix, AZ
• San José, CA
• Las Vegas, NV
• Portland, OR

The study begins with establishing a baseline of driving behavior before drivers receive traffic light information. Participants are required to pass through 75 connected traffic lights with the app active and in the foreground to access this feature.

EnLighten utilizes real-time signal data combined with GPS and cellular signals to detect when a vehicle stops at a red light. Its proprietary technology then predicts the timing of light changes. When a prediction is available, the app provides a notification and, shortly before the green light, emits a chime to alert the driver to prepare to move.

Additional cities are being integrated as progress continues.

The provision of timing information aims to help drivers avoid engaging in distracting activities near intersections and reduce rushing behavior. The pre-green chime also assists in mitigating risky situations where drivers may accelerate into intersections following other vehicles' honking or aggressive maneuvers.

It is important to note that continuous use of GPS in the background may significantly drain device battery life. EnLighten optimizes GPS usage when not actively driving or outside coverage areas.
